Combining extensive therapeutic training with decades of frontline family support experience

Educational Journey

My formal training began with a BSc in Integrative Counselling from Middlesex University, which opened my eyes to the power of different therapeutic approaches working together. This led me to pursue Family Therapy studies at King's College London and specialise in the Family Systems Approach at the Anna Freud Centre.

What drew me to these qualifications wasn't just the theory – it was discovering how families naturally have their own wisdom and resilience. My role became about helping unlock what was already there, rather than imposing external solutions.

Two Decades of Learning

For over 20 years, I've worked in Family Safeguarding and Early Help, collaborating with families facing everything from everyday challenges to significant crises. What strikes me most is how often families know exactly what they need – they just need the right information and space to find their own path.

One of the most important things I've learned is to "feed the solution, starve the problem." When families focus their energy on what's working and what they want more of, rather than getting stuck analysing what's wrong, they make remarkable progress. It's about building on strengths rather than fixing deficits.

I've also discovered that sustainable family development is about adaptation, not change. Families don't need to become completely different – they need to adapt what they're already doing in ways that work better for them. This approach respects who you already are whilst supporting your growth.

"Information Without Instruction"

Early in my career, I noticed something important: when I treated parents as intelligent researchers capable of making their own decisions, they thrived. When I fell into the trap of giving prescriptive advice, families often struggled to make changes stick.

This realisation led to my core philosophy: you are the expert on your family. My role is to provide you with scientifically-established information and create space for you to explore what resonates with your values and circumstances.

I work from two key principles: "feed the solution, starve the problem" and "adaptation, not change." Rather than focusing on what's not working, we explore what you're already doing well and how to do more of it.

I don't believe in one-size-fits-all parenting advice. I believe in empowering you with knowledge so you can make informed choices that feel authentic to your family's journey.

Life in Suffolk

I've been fortunate to call Bungay home since 2011. My daily walks through the Suffolk countryside aren't just exercise – they're essential thinking time. There's something about the natural rhythm of walking that helps me process complex ideas and maintain perspective.

Living here keeps me grounded in what matters. The community spirit, the connection to seasons and natural cycles, the slower pace that allows for genuine reflection – all of this influences how I approach family education.

Suffolk families deserve family education that reflects our values: authentic, thoughtful, respectful, and rooted in genuine care for each other's wellbeing.

The Journey to YoungFamilyLife Ltd

What inspired the creation of a different approach to family education

"After two decades in statutory services, I realised that families thrive when I treat them as capable researchers of their own solutions, rather than recipients of my advice."
The foundation of "Information Without Instruction"
"I kept meeting parents who were intelligent, caring, and deeply committed to their children – they didn't need me to tell them what to do. They needed reliable information to support their own decision-making."
Understanding what busy aspirational parents actually need
"The shift from crisis response to prevention through education isn't just better for families – it's more sustainable and hopeful. It's about planting trees for the future."

Personal Perspective

The experiences and interests that inform a holistic approach to family development

Daily Reflection

My daily walks through Suffolk countryside aren't just exercise – they're essential thinking time. Some of my best insights about family work come during these quiet moments in nature.

Music & Listening

My hobby is writing music for myself. I have a very eclectic, diverse appreciation of music—from my current favourite, Magdalena Bay's Imaginal Disk, to the quiet and soothing work of local Bungay resident Roger EnoThe Turning Year, to the baroque tapestry of Handel's Dixit Dominus – De torrente in via bibet, to the soulful Four Tops' "Walk Away Renee" and Levi Stubbs' singing, to the grandiose epics of IQ's "The Unknown Door (edit)" and Yes' "The Remembering".

Father of Three

Being a father to three adult children has taught me as much about family development as any professional training. The lived experience of parenting keeps my work grounded in reality.

Opening New Chapters

I'm currently opening an exciting new chapter in my life, following my nose with both fear and courage. It's a reminder that growth often requires stepping into uncertainty - something I understand deeply from both personal experience and professional practice.
